The 2015-2016 NHL season was by far the year of the rookie; Artemi Panarin, Jack Eichel, Max Domi, and so many more entered as the new class of first year players that have already made an impact on the NHL. Another rookie, Connor McDavid, could have been among the league’s top scorers based on his points per game but missed 37 games due to injury. Somehow, he still racked up an impressive 16 goals and 32 assists in just 45 games. With his successful short run, McDavid was named on NHL’s All-Star Rookie Team.

However, not to be eclipsed by the formidable rookie class, veteran players showed they would not be outdone. Patrick Kane scored an impressive 46 goals and had 80 assists in regular season, becoming the first American-born player to lead the league in goals. Equally imposing, 44 year-old, Jaromir Jagr had an incredible season surpassing NHL hall of famer Brett Hull for third in all-time points and goals in the NHL, only falling behind Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky. And it doesn’t look like he’s slowing down any time soon.

With a rookie class filled with talent the NHL has never seen before, and veteran players proving they’re a force to be reckoned with, it’s sure to be an exciting upcoming season!



The NHL regular season consists of 82 games and the NHL All-Star Game in January on NBCSN, followed by post-season playoffs in April. The post-season Stanley Cup playoffs include four rounds of a best-of-seven series televised across NBCSN, CNBC, and USA.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs quarterfinals, the top 8 teams from each conference are split into 2 brackets. The top teams from each conference then advance to the semifinals, where the winner of each division will face each other in the Stanley Cup Finals. The winner is then decided in a similar format, with a best of seven series determining the champion.
